Lesko Powered Rally Not Enough as Softball Falls to Defending MAAC Champion Marist

BALTIMORE, MD. Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J.) drove in four runs, but the UMBC (4-13) softball fell to the Marist Red Foxes (7-4) in a non-conference doubleheader (4-3, 7-2), on Saturday afternoon in UMBC First Pitch Kickoff Classic action.

In game one the Red Foxes took a 4-0 lead after four innings before the Retrievers cracked the scoreboard. Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va.)connected on her first home run of the season, in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-1.

Lesko tripled home two runs in the sixth to bring UMBC within 4-3, following a Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) walk and Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa.) reaching on a fielder's choice.

The Retrievers had the tying run reach in the seventh, but they could not extend the game and Megan Beiermeister earned the save for Jayne Oberdorf.

Marist took control of game two with five runs in the second inning, and added another in the third in the visitors' 7-2 victory.

The Red Foxes singled five times in the second, including two with two outs to score three runs before the final out. In UMBC's fifth inning, Daigneau and Jackson both reached and stole third and second, respectively, before scoring on Lesko's double.

Even without registering a hit on the day, Daigneau has reached base in all 12 games of her career.

The Retrievers wrap up the Kickoff Classic with a doubleheader against Lafayette and Morgan St on Sunday, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
