Alexander and Lane Smack Three Hits Apiece, But Softball Falls in Home Opener

Baltimore, MDTori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) and Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) had three hits each, while freshman Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek) continued her hit streak to start her career, but the UMBC Softball team (4-11) dropped their home opener against Morgan State (5-7), 6-2, at UMBC on Friday afternoon.

Alexander went 3-for-3 on the day and added an RBI. Lane also went 3-for-4 on the day to improve her average to .348.
Daigneau's single in the seventh inning extended her hit streak to 11 games, every game she has played this season.

The Lady Bears were able to strike first, as they put two runs up in the second inning and another three in the third inning. UMBC got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the fourth, off an Alexander single up the middle to score Kelly Lane and, with help from a center fielder error, Toni Santonastasso (Canonsburg, Pa./Pope John XXIII Regional). However, that would be all that the Retrievers would get from the inning, cutting the score to 5-2. Morgan State would add another run in the seventh inning to finish the game off 6-2.
UMBC is back in action at home on Saturday afternoon as the UMBC First Pitch Classic Tournament continues. The retrievers host Marist for a doubleheader, with first pitch for game one scheduled for 12 pm.
