Softball Returns to North Carolina for Five-Game Seahawk Softball Classic

The UMBC Softball team returns to North Carolina this weekend to partake in UNC Wilmington's Hampton Inn University Area Seahawk Softball Classic in Wilmington, N.C.

The Retrievers (3-6) will play a pair of games on Friday against Appalachian St. and then the host UNC Wilmington, followed by two more games on Saturday against UNC Wilmington and North Texas.  They also will play one on Sunday depending on their seed from the previous four games.

UMBC will look to improve on their 2-3 showing in the North Carolina A&T Aggie Invitational where they dropped their final three games.  The bats will look to heat back up as the Retrievers scored just eight runs in the last four games of the tournament, batting a combined .226 during that stretch.
Leading the way for the Retrievers during the tournament was freshman shortstop Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek) and sophomore outfielder Morgan Peyou (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) hitting .471 and .438 respectively. Daigneau also sported a slugging percentage of .824, including two doubles and two triples. Senior pitcher Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) tossed a complete game shutout against Appalachian St., allowing just four hits and walking none in the contest.
Daigneau, Peyou, and Holte were well recognized for their performances, taking being named to four awards for the week.  Dagineau was named America East Player and Rookie of the Week, Peyou was named College Sports Madness America East Player of the Week, and Holte was named America East Pitcher of the Week.
