Greensboro, N.C.- Freshman shortstop Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek) played stellar defense and went 4-for-5 with a double and two stolen bases, but the UMBC Softball team dropped a pair of games to close out the NC A&T Aggie Invitational.
The game started similar to the two teams' previous matchup on Saturday, as the game was tight early. Appalachian State (4-4), however, would eventually breakout with a run in the third, three in the fourth and five in the fifth.
UMBC (3-6) rallied in the home half of the fifth, however. With two-outs, Toni Santonastasso (Canonsburg, Pa/Pope John XXIII Regional) hit a single through the right side and Morgan Peyou (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) reached on an infield single. After a walk loaded the bases, Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) slapped an RBI single through the right side followed by a wild pitch to score another run, but App State would hold on for the 9-2 win.
Daigneau went 3-for-3 with a walk, double and stolen base.
The Retrievers jumped ahead 1-0 in the third when Peyou beat out an infield single to second and the throw from the second baseman got away allowing pinch runner Shayna Rider (Westminster, Md./Delone Catholic) to score from second. North Carolina A&T (5-5) would answer with three in the bottom of the inning to go up 3-1. The game was called due to darkness in the middle of the fifth.
