Softball Heads South for Five Games at North Carolina A&T Aggie Invitational

The UMBC Softball team travels south for five games at the North Carolina A&T Aggie Invitational this weekend.

The Retrievers (1-3) will begin play with a single game on Friday at 10:30 a.m. against Howard. The matchup will be the season opener for the Lady Bison, who went 9-32, 5-12 MEAC in 2016.

UMBC and Howard split a mid-week doubleheader in Baltimore last year.

On Saturday, the Retrievers play back-to-back games at 9 and 11 a.m. against Appalachian State and Valparaiso, respectively. ASU enters the tournament at 1-3 on the season having just picked up their first win of the season, a 2-1 decision over George Mason in Jacksonville, Fla. Valpo will be playing their first game of 2017, having ended 2016 with a magical run to the NCAA tournament. The Crusaders were 14-30 and barely qualified for the Horizon League tournament as the sixth seed. VU then won four straight games to win the title and earn the automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.

The Retrievers will then play App State at 1 p.m. on Sunday followed by a 3 p.m. game with host NC A&T. The Aggies enter the weekend with a 3-2 record on the young season.
