West Hartford, Conn. – Junior third baseman Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) homered for the fourth time in five games as the UMBC Softball team defeated Hartford, 5-0, on Sunday to take the three game series from the host Hawks.
Jackson's solo shot with two outs in the first put UMBC (19-25, 3-8) up 1-0, which the score would remain until the fifth inning. Chelsie Delperuto (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) reached on an error followed by Jaclyn Buckley (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Camden Regional) reaching on a fielder's choice in which Delperuto was safe at second on another error. Catcher Jordan Sganga then attempted to sacrifice both over with a bunt, but an error by the third baseman allowed Delperuto to come all the way home. Morgan Peyou (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) added an RBI single later in the inning to put the Retrievers up 3-0. The freshman would add another RBI in the seventh when her squeeze bunt plated Shayna Rider (Westminster, Md./Delone Catholic) and Sganga would also score on the play to make it 5-0 when the catcher tried to throw her out at third, but threw the ball away.
Pitcher Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va/Atlee) shutdown Hartford (5-31, 1-7) in the seventh to finish off the complete game victory. It was Holte's second complete game win of the series as she improved to 10-10 on the year. The junior lefthander allowed just five hits, walked none and struck out one in the effort.
The Retrievers will be off until next Saturday, when they step out of America East play to travel to Lehigh for doubleheader against the Patriot League-leading Mountain Hawks. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Leadership Park.
