Sharp, Schuler Honored As America East Presidential Scholar-Athletes
UMBC seniors Kathleen Sharp (Toms River, N.J./Toms River/Brookdale CC) and Eric Schuler (Columbia, Md./Reservoir) were honored as America East Presidential Scholar-Athletes, as announced by the conference office on Thursday. To be considered for the award, the student-athlete must be a graduating senior with a 3.75 or higher GPA.

UMBC softball’s senior Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) moved up to eighth all-time at UMBC in career hits, going 1-for-2 in her final collegiate game on Saturday afternoon at University Field. The Retrievers fell 10-2 in six innings in the season finale against Stony Brook.

UMBC Softball Drops Doubleheader at Stony Brook
UMBC softball struggled to get production from its bats in Friday afternoon’s America East doubleheader at University Field. Stony Brook tallied a pair of victories against the Retrievers on the day with a 4-0 win in game one and a 9-0 five-inning win in game two.

UMBC Softball Splits Midweek Doubleheader with Maine
UMBC softball came one out away from picking up a pair of critical America East victories in Wednesday afternoon’s neutral site doubleheader against Maine. The Retrievers came from behind for a 2-1 victory in game one behind a two-run double from junior Danielle O’Neill (Lothian, Md./Southern), but UMBC was unable to hold on to a 2-0 lead in the top of the seventh, falling 3-2 in game two at University Field on the campus of Stony Brook.

UMBC Softball Travels to Stony Brook for Five Games in Four Days
UMBC softball closes out the regular-season with five games in four days at University Field on the campus of Stony Brook, as the Dawgs battle for a playoff spot. The Retrievers will take on Maine in a rescheduled doubleheader on Wednesday, April 29, with an 11 a.m. first pitch. The Dawgs will close out the year with a three-game series against Stony Brook, beginning with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, May 1.

UMBC Softball Falls in Series Finale to Binghamton
UMBC softball dropped the America East series finale to Binghamton on Sunday afternoon at UMBC Softball Stadium, registering four hits and leaving seven runners on base in a 4-0 loss to the Bearcats.

UMBC Softball Drops AE Doubleheader to Binghamton
UMBC softball struggled to get clutch hits in Saturday’s America East doubleheader against Binghamton, stranding 21 runners on base in the two contests to drop both games of the doubleheader to the Bearcats. UMBC left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh of an 8-5 loss in game one before falling 5-1 in the day’s second game at UMBC Softball Stadium. Due to expected weather in the Baltimore area, the series finale on Sunday, April 26 has been moved to 1 p.m.

UMBC softball closes out its regular season home schedule with a three-game series against Binghamton, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m. at UMBC Softball Stadium. The series finale is set for noon on Sunday, April 26.

UMBC dropped both games of a Thursday afternoon doubleheader at UMBC Softball Stadium against nearby Towson University as the Tigers won 5-3 in game one before shutting out the Retrievers 7-0 in game two.

UMBC Softball Splits at Mount St. Mary’s
EMMITSBURG, Md. – UMBC softball’s sophomore Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) batted .600 with a .714 on-base percentage in Tuesday afternoon’s doubleheader at Mount St. Mary’s. The Retrievers defeated the Mount, 10-5, in game one, but Mount St. Mary’s picked up the split with a 4-2 win in the second game of the day at Meadows Field.

Hall Shines for UMBC Softball in a Pair of Walk-Off Victories Against South Carolina State
UMBC softball senior catcher Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) launched the sixth home run of her career to become the 10th player in program history to record 200 hits in her career in game one of Friday’s non-conference doubleheader against South Carolina State at UMBC Softball Stadium. The Retrievers combined for 25 hits in the two games en route to a pair of walk-off six inning victories, including a 14-6 win in game one and a 12-4 victory in game two.

UMBC Softball Hosts a Pair of Non-Conference Doubleheaders Over the Weekend
UMBC softball continues non-conference action on its America East bye-week by hosting a pair of doubleheaders at UMBC Softball Stadium over the weekend. The Retrievers will welcome South Carolina State to Baltimore on Friday, April 17 with a 1 p.m. first pitch, followed by a Saturday, April 18 doubleheader against Lehigh. Saturday will mark Senior Day for the Retrievers, which will be celebrated between the 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. doubleheader.

UMBC softball registered 14 hits in Tuesday’s non-conference doubleheader against La Salle, but the Retrievers used all of their offense in game one as a pair of three-run home runs helped UMBC to defeat La Salle, 6-1, but the Explorers held the Retrievers to two hits en route to a 6-0 victory in game two.

UMBC softball dropped the first two games of its conference slate to Albany on Sunday, falling in a tough 11-6 battle in game one and suffering a 1-0 setback in the rubber match at Albany Field. Senior Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) drove in a pair of runs on the day with a double, moving her into a tie for fourth on UMBC’s all-time RBI list (137) and sixth on the Retrievers’ all-time doubles list (42).

UMBC Softball Edges Albany in Series Opener, 3-2
UMBC softball’s junior infielder Bridget O’Malley (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) drove in a pair of runs on a single up the middle in the top of the fifth inning to help the Retrievers take the series opener against Albany on Saturday afternoon at Albany Field and remain unbeaten in league play. Game two of the day was pushed back to Sunday, April 12, which will now feature a doubleheader starting at 11:30 a.m. at Albany Field.

Due to expected weather in the Baltimore area, UMBC softball has pushed back its series against Maine. The three-game matchup was set to begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28 at the UMBC Softball Stadium, but now will begin with a doubleheader on Sunday, March 29 and a single game on Monday, March 30. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday and 1 p.m. on Monday.

The UMBC softball team concluded the UMBC Spring Classic with a perfect 4-0 record, after concluding a halted game with an 8-6 victory against Rhode Island and following with a 5-2 win versus the Rams. The Retrievers defeated Lafayette, 8-4, in the finale at UMBC Softball Stadium on Monday to improve to 6-9 on the season.

The Retrievers will also host a pair of doubleheaders on Tuesday and Wednesday of Spring Break.

For the second straight weekend, UMBC will have to cancel its home tournament due to inclement weather in the Baltimore area that will make UMBC Softball Stadium unplayable. After not playing for two consecutive weekends, UMBC softball’s bats went nuts, scoring 19 runs on 17 hits en route to the Retrievers sweeping a pair of contests in non-conference action in Savannah, Ga., at Allen Paulsen Sports Complex. UMBC coasted to a 12-2 victory in five innings against Morehead State in game one, and came back in dramatic fashion to defeat East Tennessee State, 7-5, on a walk-off home run from senior Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby).

For the first time in 11 tries, the annual UMBC Retriever Classic has been cancelled. Due to recent weather in the Baltimore area, the UMBC Softball Stadium will be unplayable for the tournament, which was scheduled to take place Friday, Feb. 27 through Sunday, March 1.

UMBC softball was slated to return to action in a four-game trip at the Elon Phoenix Opening Tournament on Feb. 20-21, with matchups against Youngstown State (DH), La Salle and the host Phoenix, but due to weather, the tournament has been cancelled.

UMBC softball’s senior Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) went three-for-five from the dish with two runs batted in and two walks in day two of the UNC Wilmington Landfall Park Hampton Inn & Suites Invitational, but the Retrievers were unable to get the timely hits on Saturday afternoon as UMBC left 18 runners on base in a pair of losses at Boseman Field. The Retrievers missed their chance to avenge yesterday’s loss against Saint Joseph’s, falling in game one, 8-4, followed by a 4-2 defeat versus the host Seahawks in game two.

UMBC softball’s freshman Toni Santonastasso (Galena, Ohio/Pope John XXIII Regional) drilled her first collegiate home run and finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate, but the Retrievers dropped both of their games on the opening day of the UNC Wilmington Landfall Park Hampton Inn & Suites Invitational. UMBC was edged out in a 3-0 loss to Georgetown in its opener and followed with a 13-2 loss in six innings versus Saint Joseph’s in the second game at Boseman Field.

After combining for two conference wins in the previous two seasons, UMBC softball set out to prove something in 2014, by posting its highest win total since 2009 (31-22) and registering a 20-win improvement from 2013. The 2015 Retrievers open play against Southern Illinois at the Charleston Southern Tournament on Friday at noon in Charleston, S.C.

A dinner and subsequent ceremony will take place, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Westin BWI Airport Hotel.

UMBC Softball Head Coach Joe French released the Retrievers’ 2015 schedule, which features six straight tournaments to open the season, which is slated to start on Feb. 6. UMBC will go back to hosting its three annual tournaments, beginning with the 11th Annual UMBC Retriever Classic on Feb. 27-March 1.
