BALTIMORE – The opening game of the UMBC Spring Classic has been postponed in the bottom of the fourth inning due to rain. Sacred Heart held a 2-0 advantage, but the Retrievers had a runner on second base with freshman Jaclyn Buckley (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Camden Regional) up to bat with one out. Game two, which featured UMBC against Saint Peter's, was also postponed. Games will return to action at the UMBC Softball Stadium on Saturday, March 22.
Starting pitcher Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) got herself into a jam in the top of the second inning, loading the bases with no outs, but Holte was able to get freshman McKenna Wiegand to ground into a double play and junior Kacie Wentworth to ground out to end the scoreless frame.
Sacred Heart was able to get a pair on the board in the top of the third inning, leading off the frame with a walk and a single to put runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt advanced both runners and a double to right center from senior Annie Dreher scored both runners and put SHU out in front, 2-0.
The Retrievers put a pair on base in the bottom half of the inning, as a Pioneers' error allowed Holte to reach and sophomore Danielle O'Neill (Lothian, Md./Southern) followed with an infield single, but UMBC was unable to capitalize, stranding both runners.
