BALTIMORE – UMBC head softball coach Joe French has set his 2013 fall slate and has announced a clinic, run by the Retriever coaches and players, scheduled for Oct. 13 at the UMBC Softball Stadium. The black and gold's complex will also play host to the 5th Annual UMBC Scholastic Classic Oct. 26-27.
The Retrievers open up their fall schedule with a doubleheader at George Washington on Sunday, Sept. 22, with first pitch set for 1:30 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 28, UMBC will travel to the Towson Fall Tournament, where it will matchup with Mount St. Mary's at 1 p.m. and Towson at 3 p.m.
The UMBC Softball Stadium plays host to the UMBC Fall Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 5, where the Dawgs will face Coppin State (11 a.m.) and Georgetown (3:15 p.m.). The current Retrievers take the following weekend off, as the UMBC grads make their return to campus during homecoming weekend for the team's alumni game (Oct. 12 @ 2 p.m.).
The black and gold close out their 2013 fall ball schedule at home with a doubleheader against George Mason on Saturday, Oct. 19, beginning at 11:15 a.m.
The Retrievers' fall clinic will go from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Oct 13 and is for girls, ages 12-17. Attendees will get instruction from French, staff and current UMBC Retrievers student-athletes. Sessions will cover pitching, catching, hitting, bunting and defense.
UMBC will close out the fall with the UMBC Scholastic Classic. The tournament is open to all 16U and 18U travel ball teams, with local college coaches within driving distance in attendance. In its first four years, the Scholastic Classic has had a variety of Division I, II and III universities and numerous community colleges present.
