Izudin "Izzy" Mehmedovic has been named as one of six former Retriever student-athletes that will be inducted into the UMBC Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, Jan. 31. A dinner and subsequent ceremony will take place, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Westin BWI Airport Hotel.
Mehmedovic competed in cross country and track & field from 2002-06. He graduated UMBC as the record-holder in the indoor 1,000-meters and the indoor mile (currently second all-time for UMBC in each category), the 1500-meters (now third all-time), and the 800 meters (currently fourth all-time).
He also set cross country records in the 5K (now tenth all-time for UMBC), and the 8K (now sixth all-time).
Mehmedovic, who attended Oakland Mills High School in Columbia, Md., was a member of the record-setting 4 x 800 relay team and also holds a all-time UMBC top-10 mark in the 3000-Meter Run (ninth).
The native of Bosnia dominated America East Conference competition during his tenure. He was the 2005 and 2006 America East indoor mile champion, the 2006 AE indoor distance medley relay champion and a fourth-place finisher (All-Conference) at the 2005 America East Cross Country Championships, leading UMBC to its first Division I conference title.
Mehmedovic placed seventh at the 2002 Northeast Conference Championships, leading UMBC to a second-place finish as a freshman and earning all-conference honors.
He captured numerous golds during cross country and track regular season competitions, including a title at Maryland Collegiate Open 8K Run in 2004, and the 2005 Mount St. Mary's duals. He earned his degree in in 2007.
