Cologer, Soetje Named to America East All-Academic Team

Boston, Mass.—UMBC track and field seniors Sophia Cologer (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Erick Soetje (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) were named to the America East All-Academic Team, the conference announced on Wednesday. The duo ended their careers strong over the past couple of weeks at the America East Championships and ECAC/IC4A Championships.

Cologer finished her career with a sixth place finish in the 3,000m steeplechase at the ECAC Championships, crossing the tape in a time of 10:34.31. She took third in the 5,000m (17:16.93) and fourth in the steeplechase (10:42.93) at the America East Championships. Cologer holds a 3.82 GPA and will graduate with a degree in biochemistry.

Soetje ended the season with a ninth place finish in the 400m dash at the IC4A meet with a time of 48.38. He teamed up with Jamal Cody, Darrius Oxley and Marcus Foster to take fifth in the 4x400m relay. He was a part of the gold medal winning 4x400m relay at the America East Championships, while taking second in 400m dash. He will graduate with a 3.94 GPA with a degree in chemical engineering. 

A handful of Retrievers will head to the NCAA East Preliminaries in Lexington, Ky. starting tomorrow to end the 2016-17 season.
