Adelola, McGovern, and Schuler Earn America East All-Academic Honors

America East Release

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC track and field seniors Deborah Adelola (Lanham, Md./Bladensburg) and Kirsten McGovern (Sykesville, Md./Century), as well as junior Eric Schuler (Columbia, Md./Reservoir), have been named to the 2014 America East Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Team, the conference office announced on Tuesday morning.

Adelola was also named to the conference Indoor Track and Field Team back in March, while McGovern and Schuler both received the honor back in the fall for the cross country season.

After a solid indoor campaign, Adelola recorded her best season as a Retriever this spring, notching career-best marks and winning her first individual America East gold medal.  At the 2014 championship meet at Vermont, the senior raced past the field in the 400m dash with a personal-best time of 55.84 to claim the gold medal and jump to second in the UMBC record book.  She also anchored the 4x400 relay team to a gold medal at the America East Championships after running the anchor leg for the school record-breaking 4x200 Retriever team at the prestigious Penn Relays.

In the classroom, Adelola completed her time at UMBC with steady success.  Prior to graduating, she posted a 3.40 grade-point-average (GPA) while studying for a degree in psychology.  She was named to the Dean's List four times in her academic career and was twice named to the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll.

McGovern earns her second All-Academic award of her senior year after registering career-best runs at the conference championships and achieving highly in the classroom.  In Vermont, McGovern finished the 10,000m run with a time of 37:27.37, the fourth-best time in UMBC history.  She also competed in the 5,000m event during the outdoor season, placing second at the Morgan State Legacy Meet with a time of 18:15.98.

In her academic pursuits, McGovern recorded a 3.96 GPA while working towards a degree in environmental science.  In addition, she has been earning a minor degree in linguistics, as well as an honors college certificate.  McGovern has twice been named to the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll for track and field and her selection to the All-Academic Team in the fall for cross country was her second such distinction.  Prior to the Spring 2014 semester, she had been named to the President's List at UMBC five times for accumulating a perfect 4.0 semester GPA, while also receiving a spot on the Dean's List once.

Schuler not only was named to the All-Academic Team in the fall, but was selected as the America East Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete.  He continued his success in the spring while competing in the distance events for the Retrievers.  The junior ran in the 10,000m race at the America East Championships after posting a season-best 5k time of 15:12.28 at the Colonial Relays at William and Mary.

Heading into the spring semester, Schuler has maintained a spotless 4.0 GPA while pursuing a degree in computer science at UMBC.  He has received a spot on the President's List in each of his seven semesters on campus as a result of his work.  In addition, he has gained a spot on the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of his first two years with the Retriever track and field team.
