UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – UMBC junior Alisha Beeman (Bridgeport, Conn./Bunnell/Hartford) finished eighth in the pentathlon, scoring a school-record 3,277 points, as the Retriever track and field program opened the weekend at the Penn State Nationals, Friday evening at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.
Beeman, who claimed the school record in the high jump two weeks ago at the Terrapin Invitational, grabbed the top score in the pentathlon by surpassing Chowan Brightful's total of 3,227 set during the 2010-11 season. Beeman placed tied for third in the high jump after clearing 1.67m (5'5.75") and took seventh in the shot put (9.53m; 31'3.25").
A week after breaking the school mark in the 3,000m run, sophomore Hassan Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) ran a personal-best in the 5,000m at Penn State, missing out on the UMBC record by less than a second. Omar placed seventh in the race, crossing the line with a personal-best time of 14:40.20 to move up to second all-time in program history.
Sprinter Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) advanced to the finals of the 60m dash, finishing sixth overall. The junior placed fourth in the preliminary round with a time of 7.49, and then qualified for the finals by finishing sixth by replicating her time in the semifinals. In the finals, Jackson clocked in at 7.53.
In the weight throw, junior Thor Serafenas (Olney, Md./Good Counsel/Clemson) recorded a season-best of 17.06m (55'11.75") to place ninth. Senior Ray Stinsman III (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) finished 17th, also with a season-best heave (15.48m; 50'9.50"), as well.
