CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The UMBC track and field team swept the four weekly America East awards, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon. Senior Trae Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone) and sophomore Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown), each of whom set a school record at the Penn State Relays, took the Male and Female Track Athlete of the Week awards, respectively, while seniors Shioma Obemeata (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Prep/St. Francis) and Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) swept the field honors.
Competing for the first time in 2013, Proctor set a new personal-best and equaled the UMBC school record en route to winning the 60m hurdles. The two-time America East champion matched his previous career-best of 8.02 in the preliminaries and then bettered it to 8.00 in the finals. Negasi Gerima had held sole possession of the record in the event since setting it in 2000. Proctor's time of 8.00 is the best in the conference this season and tied for ninth-fastest in the country.

For the women, Jackson had yet another record-setting day, bettering her own UMBC record for the third time in just two meets this season. After dropping her school record time twice at the season-opening Bison Opener on Dec. 1, the sophomore did herself one better, winning the 60m dash at Penn State with a new personal-best time of 7.42, the top time in the America East in 2012-13 and seventh-fastest in the NCAA. She was not done there, however, recording her third victory of the year by taking top honors in the 200m dash (24.35).
In the field events, Obemeata recorded an IC4A qualifying jump of 14.50m (47'7.00"), a mark which sets the standard in the conference this season. In addition, he competed in the high jump competition, clearing 1.80m (5'10.75").
Despite placing fifth in both throwing events at the Penn State meet, Deller posted season-bests in both competitions and now leads the America East in the shot put. Last year's Most Outstanding Field Athlete, Deller registered a toss of 13.72m (45'0.25") to pull ahead of her conference rivals while her distance of 15.65m (51'4.25") in the weight throw stands as the third-farthest this season.
The UMBC track and field team returns to competition this Friday, Jan. 11 as the Retrievers head to New York City for the Gotham Cup.
