CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – UMBC track and field junior Cameron McDearmon (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin)was named the America East Field Athlete Performer of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
The announcement comes after McDearmon claimed the gold medal in the weight throw and the silver medal in the shot put at the Patriot Games, held on Saturday at George Mason.
McDearmon, who already places fourth on UMBC's all-time list in the weight throw, recorded the second-longest throw of the year in the America East with a toss of 17.37m (56' 11.85) to pick up his second win of the year.
He added to his strong day by finishing second in the shot put with a throw of 14.40m (47' 2.92").
McDearmon is the fourth Retriever to win a weekly award this season, with Chowan Brightful (New Market, Md./Linganore), Trae Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone) and Mercedes Jackson (Huntington, Md./Huntington) already picking up an honor.
UMBC continues its indoor schedule this weekend when the Retrievers travel to New York City to take part in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.
