Charlottesville, Va. – The doubles tandem of senior Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) and junior Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) captured the Orange Doubles division at the 2014 UVA Fall Classic on Friday, Oct. 3.
In singles action on Saturday, sophomore Biyik Akinshemoyin (Laurel, Md./Resevoir) highlighted UMBC's efforts by advancing to the semifinals of the Gold Division.
Gray and Drean continued their excellent fall by winning three matches to take the title. In the first round, they outlasted the duo of Bybel/Kane of Bucknell, 8-5, before going to the limit to take out Old Dominion's tandem of Weindl/Glavin, 8-7 (1). In their third match of the day, the Retriever pair overwhelmed the combined pair of Svensson (VCU) and Cornish (UVA), 8-2.
Akinshemoyin received a first-round bye and then proceeded to win a three-set marathon, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, over Ben Gerber of Bucknell. He will face Florin Radu of Princeton in the semifinals on Sunday.
