Carter and Svard Led Men's Tennis Past George Mason, 6-1

BALTIMORE – The UMBC men's tennis team won its fifth consecutive match, defeating George Mason, 6-1, at 40 West Racquet Club on Friday afternoon, March 7.

The Retrievers improve to 7-3 on the season, while GMU slips to 3-5.

UMBC captured the doubles point, as the No. 1 duo of sophomores Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) and Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) blistered Jimmy Lange/Joe Hill, 8-2. The other two matches were closely contested, but the Retrievers' No. 3 duo of junior Kamal Patel (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) and sophomore Eliott Loubatie (Paris, France) edged Jimmy Davis/Chris Borden, 8-6 to capture the opening point.

"Once again, the team came out well prepared to compete," said head coach Rob Hubbard. "I was particularly impressed with how Justin Carter and Melker Svard dominated the top of the Mason line-up both in singles and doubles."

In singles action, Carter and Svard dropped a combined three games in straight set victories over Davis and Lange respectively. For the fourth consecutive match, Loubatie clinched it for UMBC, as he outlasted Aaron Capitel, 7-5, 6-3.

Junior Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) and freshman Biyik Akinshemoyin (Laurel, Md./Resevoir) also won their singles matches in straight sets.

"Hopefully, we can continue this level of play through the weekend versus UMES and Drexel," said Hubbard.
The Retrievers hosts UMES at the UMBC Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon, before traveling to Philadelphia to take on Drexel on Sunday.
