Charlotte, N.C.—UMBC swimming and diving senior Gregor Spoerlein (Bamberg, Germany/Clavius Gymnasium) and sophomore Elijah Wright (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) took home CCSA Swimmer and Diver of the Week honors, the conference announced Wednesday. Wright took home his second award of the year, while Spoerlein earns his first of the year for their efforts in a 152-126 win against Towson on Saturday.
Spoerlein had a big week for the Retrievers in a win against Towson. The senior won a pair of individual events, as well as swimming the anchor leg of the winning 400 free relay. He won both the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 21.19 and 46.32 respectively. The 400 free relay team took first with a time of 3:06.32, as Spoerlein took home the relay swimming the anchor leg.
Elijah swept the diving disciplines against the Tigers. The Baltimore native won the 1 meter dive with a score of 243.90, while also taking the 3 meter with a score of 253.20.
UMBC will return to the pool this Saturday, Oct. 29 at Gardner-Webb at noon. The meet will be held at YSSC in Duncan, S.C.
