Cambridge, Mass.- UMBC freshman forward Jordan Becker (Pocomoke City, Md./Pocomoke) was named America East Conference Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week for games ending Aug. 28.
Becker scored the lone goal as the Retrievers edged visiting Mount St. Mary's, 1-0, in the opening game for both teams. The contest was played in steady rain on Saturday, Aug. 27, as the Baltimore area was just beginning to feel the effects of Hurricane Irene.
The former Pocomoke High School standout was the lone UMBC freshman to earn starting nod in his first intercollegiate contest. He played 39 minutes and was on the field in the early stages of the second half as UMBC struck for the game-winning goal.
In the 59th minute, Retriever senior midfielder Andrew Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonogh) took a free kick from 27 yards out and sophomore forward Pete Caringi III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) headed it toward to cage. Mountaineer goalkeeper got a glove on it, and Becker pounced on the rebound, tapping it into an unguarded net from close range.
Becker had two shots in his debut, as UMBC won its sixth consecutive season opener.
The defending America East champions return to action on Thursday, Sept. 1, when they host St. Francis (N.Y.) at 7:00 p.m.
