For Second Time in Three Weeks, Men's Soccer's Pete Caringi Named America East Rookie of the Week
Cambridge, Mass.—For the second time in the first three weeks of league awards, UMBC freshman forward Pete Caringi III(Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) has been named America East Conference Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week.
Caringi bailed out a desperate UMBC side, scoring the game-tying goal in the 85th minute to draw the Retrievers even at 1-1 with La Salle in an eventual 2-1 UMBC victory on Sept. 15. Three days later, he went on to score the game-winning goal in the 78th minute to cap a furious Retriever comeback, which wiped out a 2-0 Mount St. Mary's halftime edge and propelled visiting UMBC to a 3-2 victory
Though six games, Caringi has four goals in 207 minutes of action in his initial season and was a +4 (5 UMBC goals scored, 1 allowed) when he was on the field this week.
Caringi is second in America East in goals per game (0.67), trailing only teammate Levi Houapeu (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill), who averages 1.0 goal per game through six contests.
The son of UMBC Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr. also captured the award on Sept. 7, 2010.
The Retrievers (4-2-0) take on Loyola (Md.) at the new Ridley Athletic Complex on Wednesday evening Sept. 22.
