BOSTON – Two Retrievers, making their collegiate debuts, earned America East Men's Lacrosse honors, in the first full week of competition by league teams.
Goalkeeper Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and midfielder Steven Zichelli (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) were tabbed Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week respectively for games ending February 11.
Lingner was also named to the USILA Team of the Week.
Lingner entered Saturday's game versus Richmond at the 9:10 mark of the first quarter and the Retrievers trailing, 4-1. He proceeded to save 13 of 15 shots put on goal by the 20th-ranked Spiders in the final 50:50 of action and earned the victory in a 9-6 decision.
Lingner made six fourth quarter saves, including two key stops in the closing moments to keep the UMBC lead at 8-6 before defender Jason Brewster (San Diego, Calif.) iced the contest with a goal from just behind the center line with 65 seconds remaining.
Zichelli shared game high-scoring honors with junior Billy Nolan (Crofton, Md./Arundel) (3 goals, 1 assist) and tallied a pair of goals and two helpers. He would notch the sixth and go-ahead score early in the third quarter as UMBC tallied six consecutive times to erase a 5-2 deficit en route to their first season-opening triumph since 2011.
UMBC received votes in both the USILA and Maverik (media) polls this week.
The Retrievers play Navy for the first time since 2003 in Annapolis on February 17, with a 1:30 p.m. start time.
