Connor Gordon Named AE Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week

Cambridge, Mass. - UMBC red-shirt freshman goalkeeper Connor Gordon (Bourne, Mass./Tabor Academy)  has been named America East Conference Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week for games ending March 29, the league office announced today.

Gordon fell one save shy of his season high, making 15 stops against Stony Brook as the Retrievers prevailed, 12-11, in overtime.

The Retriever netminder made a one-on-one save with his team two men down midway through overtime, setting up Pat Young's (Ewing, N.J./Christchurch (Va.) School) game-winning goal with 9.6 seconds to play in extra time.  He has recorded more saves than goals allowed in eight of his nine starts for UMBC (5-4, 1-0 America East) this season.

Gordon is averaging 12.33 saves per game, good for sixth place in the nation through games of March 30. His save percentage is an outstanding 56.3 percent, which is 14th-best in the country.

Notes: Senior attackman Matt Gregoire (Crofton, Md./South River), who recorded his sixth game this season with three or more goals versus Stony Brook, fifth in the nation with 3.22 goals per game (29)… Gregoire has posted three or more goals in a dozen games in his career.

Senior face-off specialist Phil Poe (Harwood, Md./DeMatha) collected a team-best nine ground balls versus Stony Brook and is now tied for ninth place in school history with 275 ground balls… Former UMBC All-American Mark Gold collected 275 ground balls from 1981-84… Poe has now attempted more than 1,000 career draws, winning 54.5 percent (school-record 553) of 1,016 attempted.  

UMBC is now 17-7 under Don Zimmerman in overtime games and the Retriever mentor is 19-9 in his 28 seasons as a head coach… The Retrievers' last overtime game was the 2013 conference opener when they fell,15-14, at Hartford… Young also scored the game-winning goal against the Seawolves as a freshman in 2013, netting a shot with 2:39 to play in the fourth quarter to break a 12-all tie and propel UMBC to a 13-12 victory… UMBC is now 8-3 in America East openers.

The Retrievers' unusual opening schedule in America East play had them opening at home on a Friday evening versus Stony Brook, then next competing on Sunday, April 6 at Binghamton… The Bearcats (3-5, 1-0) opened AE play with an 11-10 win at Hartford on March 29 and they will travel to No. 8 Syracuse for a Wednesday evening contest at the Carrier Dome.
