Men’s Lacrosse Goalie Brian McCullough Voted UMBC Athlete of the Month for March

March Highlights of the Month

BALTIMORE—Junior goalkeeper Brian McCullough of the men’s lacrosse team was named UMBC Athlete of the Month for March 2011 in a poll of fans conducted from April 1-7. McCullough received 1,587 of 2,511 total votes (63.2 percent) to outdistance himself from runner-up Julia Culotta of softball (738 votes, 29.4 percent). Kim Berghaus of women’s tennis, Amanda Pappas of women’s lacrosse and Rasid Winklaar of men’s tennis were also nominated. 
 

McCullough recorded a career-high 14 saves against 11th-rankedNorth Carolina on March 5; his previous career high was eight. But he suffered a thumb injury during the game against the Tar Heels and missed the next two contests. McCullough returned to the nets on March 26 and was UMBC’s America East Player of the Game with 13 saves in the 9-7 win over Quinnipiac. He made eight saves and allowed only two goals in the final 30 minutes, including two stops in the final minute to protect the two-goal lead. The Garden City, N.Y., native made 27 saves in two March contests and has 59 on the season.
