BOSTON – Retriever junior guard Jairus Lyles (Silver Spring, Md./DeMatha) and freshman forward Arkel Lamar (Bridgeport, Conn./St. Thomas More) have been selected as America East Conference Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week and Rookie-of-the Week respectively for games ending Nov. 20.

Lyles, a preseason America East All Conference honoree, scored 20 or more points for the 17th and 18th times in 25 career games at UMBC in victories over Delaware State (90-68) and Kennesaw State (93-85) last week. He scored 24 versus the Hornets on Nov.16 and tallied a season-high 29 (in 30 minutes) against the Owls on Nov. 19.

Lyles connected on 20 of 33 shots (60.6%) from the floor for the week. He scored 23 of his 29 points versus KSU in 15 second half minutes, including 15 points in the first 5:13 of the stanza as UMBC rallied from a six-point second half deficit to post the victory. The 2016 America East Second Team honoree is averaging 23.5 points per game, shooting 54.7 percent from floor and adding 5.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.

Lyles' 35 field goals made through games of Nov. 19 ranked second in the nation and his total of 94 points was ninth.

The honor is Lyles' second America East weekly award; he earned the nod on Feb. 7, 2015 after averaging 30.5 points in two games in his initial season at UMBC.

Lyles was also tabbed College Sports Madness America East Men's Basketball Player of the Week

Lamar posted a season-high 15 points and tied his season best with eight caroms in the 93-85 victory over Kennesaw State. He added four steals versus the Owls, sparking UMBC's 14-0 advantage on fast break points.

The 6'5" freshman is averaging 8.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game through four games. He has been assigned to the opponent's best-scoring interior player early in his tenure.

At 4-0, UMBC is off to its best start since the 2000-01 campaign when they opened with five consecutive victories. The Retrievers are averaging 88.0 points per game, which is currently ranked 40th in the nation.
