Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC baseball head coach Bob Mumma announced the 2019 schedule on Monday, which features 23 home games and 52 games overall. The Retrievers are coming off a 22-29 campaign a year ago, to go along with a third-place finish (12-11) in the America East Conference. The Retrievers have had recent success in the league, getting to the championship in two out of the past four years, including a conference crown in 2017.
"We are excited about our schedule this year. We are going to Miami and UNC Asheville, allowing some of our kids to play in front of family and friends and to play some quality opponents," Head Coach Bob Mumma said. "All our games will prepare us for what is to come in conference. The America East has been steady for the past couple of years, and each conference weekend is a battle".
UMBC opens the season with a pair of weekend road trips to UNC Asheville (Feb. 22-24) and Miami (March 1-3) before returning north to take on Coppin State on March 5 and Navy on March 6 both in another pair of road encounters.
The Retrievers will then have a string of 11 straight games at home starting with a weekend series against Delaware State, March 8-10. UMBC will then welcome Mount St. Mary's to Alumni Field on March 12 before opening America East play against Stony Brook, March 16-17. The end of the homestand features a mid-week matchup with George Mason (Wed., March 20) and a weekend set with America East rival UMass Lowell (March 23-24).
The month of March ends with a mid-week meeting with George Washington (Tuesday, March 26) and a series against Mount St. Mary's (March 29-31) on the road.
UMBC will head up I-695 to open April against Towson on April 2 before returning to Alumni Field the next day to host Navy. The Retrievers will then hit the road for their first road America East series against Maine on April 6-7. George Washington comes to town just two days later before the Retrievers hit the road for the next five games against Delaware (April 10), Albany (April 13-14) and Eastern Shore (April 17).
The Black-and-Gold return home to take on defending America East champion Hartford, April 19-20 and then to close out the season set with Towson three days later. The month ends with road trips to Stony Brook (April 27-28) and La Salle (April 30).
The final month of the season will see the Dawgs play six straight at home against Georgetown (May 1), Binghamton (May 4-5), Delaware (May 7) and Coppin State (May 8) before ending the regular season at UMass Lowell (May 11-12) and Georgetown (May 14).
This year, the America East Championships will be held at Binghamton from May 22-26. The top six teams make the conference tournament with the winner earning an automatic birth in the NCAA Tournament.
