UMBC Baseball Returns to Alumni Field to Host Delaware, Take on Coppin State This Week

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball returns home to take on Delaware on Tuesday night, before playing Coppin State in a road contest that will be held at Alumni Field due to field availability. The Retrievers are 18-23, 9-9 AE on the year after being swept by first place Hartford this weekend. Senior Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) led the way with a pair of home runs during the weekend.

Scouting the Retrievers:

- The Retrievers are 18-23, 9-9 AE on the year after being swept by first place Hartford this weekend. Senior Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) led the way with a pair of home runs during the weekend.

-Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) leads UMBC at the plate with a .388 average. Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) leads the team with 44 hits and 28 RBI hitting .308. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) has 40 hits with 20 coming as extra base hits.

-Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Appalachian State) leads the pitching staff with a 1.58 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 45.2 innings of work. Freshman Aaron Husson (Hawley, Pa.) has the most wins on the staff with a 4-1 record in 13 appearances.

Scouting the Blue Hens:

-Delaware enters the midweek matchup at 25-22 after taking two of three from CAA rival Elon this weekend. The Blue Hens rallied for an extra inning win in the finale to move to 9-9 in CAA play.

-Kyle Baker and Jordan Hutchins lead the Blue Hens at the plate with averages of .349 and .303. Baker has a team best 58 hits and 31 RBI with 81 total bases. Kevin Mohollen has scored 40 times with Nick Patten blasting eight home runs.

-Freshman Joey Haass will start for Delaware on Tuesday. Haass is 2-0 with a 4.91 ERA in ten appearances and three starts. He has struck out 11 batters giving up just 12 earned runs this year.

Scouting the Eagles:

-Coppin State most recently knocked off Norfolk State to earn the MEAC North Division crown this weekend. The Eagles are 19-21-1, 18-4 MEAC on the year. Coppin State has played just six games at home this year, going 3-3 in those games.

-The Eagles have been solid at the plate all year, and have seven players hitting over .300 on the year. Derek Lohr leads the charge with a .361 average. Nazier McIlwain leads the team in multiple categories including hits (51), doubles (13), home runs (2), and RBI (38).

-Jahmon Taylor is the ace of the staff with a 2.71 ERA and a 64- record in ten starts with two complete games and one shutout. He has struck out 73 batters, giving up just 20 earned runs this year.

All-Time Series:

-The Retrievers and Blue Hens will be meeting for the 55th time all-time and the second time in as many weeks. Last week the Retrievers took down the Blue Hens with an 8-7 come from behind victory in Newark. Delaware leads the series 39-15.

-UMBC and Coppin State have met 49 times prior to Wednesday with UMBC holding a commanding 47-2 advantage. Earlier this year, UMBC defeated Coppin State at Alumni Field 7-2 in late April.
