West Hartford, Conn.—UMBC baseball fell in both games of the double header with league leader Hartford on Saturday by scores of 9-7 and 4-2. Matt Campbell (Chesapeake, Va.) and Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y.) both homered in game two.
UMBC falls to 18-22, 9-8 AE on the year while the Hawks improve to 18-26, 12-5 AE.
Hartford got things started with six runs over the first two innings. UMBC responded in the third. After Matt Campbell got on with a walk and advanced to second off an error. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) followed up with a walk, as both would score on a Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) double to left center to cut the deficit to 6-2.
The Hawks added a run in the third on a solo home run, but UMBC kept clawing back, getting an RBI double from Collin Stack to cut the Hawk lead to 7-3. The Retrieves used a big sixth inning to get the deficit to 9-6. Zack DeThomasis (Rensselaer, N.Y. doubled in Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa.), followed by Campbell reaching on a fielding error allowing Dmitri Floyd (Dover, Del.) to score to make it 9-5. Bright struck again with an RBI single to score DeThomasis to end the big inning down 9-6.
DeThomasis continued the rally in the seventh with an RBI single, but that would be all the Retrievers would get in a 9-7 loss.
Bright led the way with three hits and three RBI in the loss. DeThomasis had a pair of hits and two RBI.
Both starting pitchers had it going early, but the Retrievers were the first to crack the scoreboard in the third. Stack led off the inning with a solo shot to give UMBC an early lead.
Hartford battled, eventually taking the lead with a four-run inning in the fifth to go in front.
UMBC answered the next half inning with another solo home run, this time coming from Matt Campbell to cut the Hawk lead to 4-2. However, the Retrievers could not complete the rally, falling in game two 4-2.
UMBC and Hartford will conclude the series tomorrow at noon.
