UMBC Baseball Takes on First-Place Hartford This Weekend

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball travels to West Hartford with first place in the America East on the line in a three-game series. The Retrievers are just a game back of the Hawks in the standings with three conference weekends left in the regular season. UMBC is coming off an 8-7 comeback win at Delaware on Wednesday and are 18-20, 9-6 AE on the year, winners of their last five.

Scouting the Retrievers:

- UMBC is coming off an 8-7 comeback win at Delaware on Wednesday and are 18-20, 9-6 AE on the year, winners of their last five.

-Freshman Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) leads the team with a .419 average with 31 hits and 11 runs scored. Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) leads the team with 40 hits and four home runs, driving in a team best 25 runs. AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) has 39 hits with 18 of those hits coming as doubles.

-Stephen Schoch leads the team with a 1.44 ERA in 43.2 innings pitched. He has nine saves, just two away from tying the career record set by Denis Mikush just two years ago. He has struck out 56 batters. Max Goron (Laurel, Md./Reservoir), Chase Bailey (Fairfax, Va.) and Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) will start this weekend.

Scouting the Hawks:

-The Hawks come into the weekend at 16-26, 10-5 AE on a two-game losing streak. Most recently, Hartford dropped an 11-4 decision to UMass at Dunkin' Donuts Park on Tuesday. The Hawks have been solid at home, winning 12 of 17 games.

-Nick Campana and Ashton Bardzell lead the team at the plate with a .414 and .324 average. Campana has 63 hits with 14 doubles and nine home runs on the year. Both he and Bardzell have driven in 32 runs.

-Hartford will trot Billy DeVito, Nicholas Dombkowski and Nathan Florence out this weekend who have a combined 5-14 record. Seth Pinkerton leads the bullpen with a 2.49 ERA in 19 appearances. Florence has struck out the most batters, fanning 61 in 55.1 innings.

All-Time Series:

-UMBC and Hartford have met 61 times in the all-time series, with the Retrievers leading 32-29, including a 2-1 series win back in March. Earlier this year, the Retrievers took two of three from the Hawks in Baltimore, dropping the first game before winning the last two. Last year in West Hartford, UMBC took two of three in mid-April.
