UMBC Baseball Hosts Navy, Towson in Midweek Action at Alumni Field

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball returns home to take on local-rivals Navy and Towson this week on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Retrievers are coming off a series win against Stony Brook this past weekend. UMBC took the first two games before falling in the series finale on Sunday. The Retrievers are currently third in the America East with a 13-20, 6-6 AE record.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC enters the midweek at 13-20, coming off a 3-2 week that saw UMBC take two of three from Stony Brook and knocking off Coppin State on Wednesday. The Retrievers are currently in third place in the America East.

-Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) leads the team with a .385 batting average since being inserted in the lineup. Junior AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) leads the team with 34 hits, 16 doubles and 23 RBI. 

-Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Appalachian State) leads the pitching staff with a 1.63 ERA in 17 appearances, all out of the bullpen. He leads the staff with 38.2 innings pitched with 53 strikeouts.

Scouting the Midshipmen:

-Navy enters the contest at 31-11, going 10-2 in game away from Annapolis. The Midshipmen have won their last five contests, sweeping rival Army West Point this past weekend.

-Zach Biggers leads the Mids at the plate with a .355 average, one of four players hitting over .300. Stephen Born (.325), Liam Lowery (.325) and Logan Knowles (.301) are also hitting over .300. Biggers leads the team with 59 hits and 30 RBI.

-Navy will throw Nick Elder against the Retrievers. Elder is 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA in six appearances with five starts. He has thrown 28.0 innings with 20 strikeouts. Noah Song leads thee staff with a 6-2 record and a 1.55 ERA in 64.0 innings. He has struck out 93 batters, walking just 31.

Scouting the Tigers:

-Towson comes to Alumni Field at 12-27, and are coming off a weekend that saw the Tigers drop two of three to CAA rival UNCW. The Tigers are just 7-15 on the road this year.

-Richie Palacios leads the Tigers in every statistical category at the plate. Palacios is batting .359 with 52 hits, 14 doubles and eight home runs. He has also driven in 29 runs and is slugging .621 with 20 stolen bases.

-Matt Watters leads the pitching staff with a 2.93 ERA out of the bullpen with David Marriggi and Michael Adams leading the rotation with three wins each. Adams leads the staff with 68 strikeouts in 62.0 innings of work.

All-Time Series:

-Navy and UMBC will be meeting for the 47th time in the series, with UMBC leading 26-20. Earlier this year, Navy took down the Retrievers 7-0 in Annapolis earlier this year. Prior to the meeting this year, UMBC had won five straight, including a 10-1 win last year.

-The Tigers and Retrievers will meet for the 92nd time in the all-time series, with the Tigers holding a slim 49-41-1 lead. Earlier this year the Retrievers won 6-4, coming back from down 4-1 in the ninth to win. Wright ripped a two-RBI single to put UMBC in front late.

On Deck: 

-UMBC will host Maine in a critical America East series this weekend. The Retrievers and Black Bears will play a double header on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. with a single game at noon on Sunday.
