Lowell, Mass.—UMBC baseball racked up the awards on Tuesday night at the annual postseason banquet. Freshman Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) was named America East Rookie of the Year, after hitting just south of .400 during the conference season.
Torres finished the season with a .284 batting average and 42 hits during his rookie campaign. However the Miami native batted .375 with 27 hits and 15 RBI in 20 conference games to earn the honor as top rookie. He also earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team and All-Rookie Team.
Senior Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) earned his second straight All-Conference First Team honor, after leading UMBC in runs home runs (9), RBI (33), and slugging percentage (.602). His .602 slugging percentage was second best in the conference this year.
Classmate Michael Austin (Eldersburg, Md./Bethune-Cookman) and junior Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./WT Woodson) joined Torres on the All-Conference Second Team. Austin became a steady hand in the Retriever rotation, going 3-2 in seven starts with a team best 4.61 ERA. Bright came on strong at the end of the year, joining the lineup as the designated hitter. He finished with a .301 average and 25 hits.
Cory Callahan (Sykesville, Md./Good Counsel) was named to the All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year. The senior boasts a 3.58 GPA and will graduate with a degree in biology. He has seen action in 19 games out of the bullpen for UMBC, collecting four saves in 26 innings pitched.
UMBC earned the two seed in the America East Tournament, and will have a first round bye. The Retrievers will play the winner of No. 3 Stony Brook and No. 6 Hartford on Thursday, May 25 at 2:30 p.m.
