UMBC Baseball Travels to Hartford for Key #AEBASE Weekend Series

Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC baseball team looks to get back in the win column as they head up north to play at Hartford in an America East showdown over the weekend. The Retrievers are in the midst of a three-game losing streak after 3-2 and 10-4 decisions to George Washington and Coppin State, respectively.

Scouting the Retrievers (9-15, 3-3):

-UMBC is coming off a 10-4 loss to Coppin State on Wednesday night. Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC) lead the offense going 3-for-4. Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) added in two hits to go along with two RBI as him and Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) both hit home runs in the loss. 

-Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) leads the offense for UMBC, hitting .348 while tied for second on the team in home runs (two) and RBI (15). Stack leads the team in RBI with 16 and hits with 30 as he is posting a .333 batting average. Stewart brings the rain with a team-high three home runs, while being tied with Dolshun for second in RBI.

-Joe Vanderplas (Fairfax, Va./Tennessee) leads the rotation with a 5.04 ERA with a team-high three wins this year. Vanderplas has thrown 25 innings with 15 strikeouts in 2017. Jacob Christian (Nokesville, Va./Patriot) leads the staff with 31.0 innings pitched with 35 strikeouts.

Scouting the Hawks (10-16, 2-4):

-The Hawks are coming off a win in a high scoring affair Wednesday night, as they defeated Marist 18-16. They are entering the series on a three-game win streak, with half of their wins this season coming at home.

-Hartford is led at the plate by Erik Ostberg, who sports the top batting average in the nation at .500 this season. He also leads the Hawks in home runs (six) and RBI (23).

-On the mound, Billy DeVito and Connor Lewis are both tied for the most wins on the team with two. DeVito also leads the team in innings pitched with 26.0 and has a team-high 24 strikeouts. Brian Stepniak leads the team in ERA with a 3.96.

All-Time Series:

-UMBC and Hartford have met 55 times before, with only two games being played against the two teams as non-America East foes. UMBC holds a 28-27 lead in the overall series; however, Hartford holds a 27-26 lead as America East competitors.

On Deck:

-The Retrievers will be off for the week following Easter, but will return to play on Saturday, April 22 as they host UMass Lowell at Alumni Field in an America East weekend series. They will play a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m., and then finish the series with a single game scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 23.
