Arlington, Va.—UMBC baseball took the lead after being down 1-0, but a late inning run by the Colonials propelled them to a 3-2 victory on Tuesday. Senior Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) had a pair of hits and RBI in the loss.
The Retrievers fall to 9-14 on the year while George Washington improves to 16-17 in 2017.
Dolshun was the lone Retriever with multiple hits, going 2-3 from the plate with two RBI on Tuesday.
The Colonials took an early 1-0 lead, getting a two-out RBI double from Bobby Campbell, scoring Andrew Selby.
The Retrievers found their footing in the third, getting a two-out single from Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), followed by a single from Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) to put two on with two out. Dolshun then came up and ripped a double to left center to score Casali and Carroll, giving UMBC a 2-1 lead.
GW answered back with a run in the fourth, then took the lead for good in the bottom of eighth on a fielder's choice to win 3-2.
UMBC gave up just nine hits between three different pitchers, recording the only strikeout in the contest.
The Black and Gold are back in action tomorrow, Wednesday April 12 against Coppin State. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Alumni Field.
