Vestal, N.Y.—UMBC baseball dropped their series opener with Binghamton, 9-1 on Saturday. The Retrievers were held to seven hits, as the Bearcats scored eight unanswered in the middle of the game to earn the victory.
The Retrievers fall to 8-12, 2-2 AE on the year while Binghamton improves to 11-5, 2-1 AE.
Junior Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC) led the Retrievers, going 2-3 from the plate with a pair of singles.
The Bearcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead getting an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning.
UMBC answered in the fourth, tying the game after Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) led off the inning with a single. Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) followed suit with a single of his own to put runners on first and second with no out.
Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) moved Carroll to third after a fielder's choice setting up Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro). Stewart flied out to left, scoring Carroll to make it 1-1 after four.
However the Bearcats scored three in the fifth and five in the seventh to push ahead 9-1, holding the Retrievers at bay the rest of the way.
Binghamton had four hitters with multiple hits, with two of them accounting for six RBI.
Games two and three of the series will be played tomorrow, Sunday April 9 starting at noon. Junior Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and senior Joe Vanderplas (Fairfax, Va./Tennessee) are scheduled to start for the Retrievers.
