Retriever Offense Explodes in Sweep of Mount St. Mary's on Sunday

Baltimore, Md.— UMBC baseball won their fourth in a row and fifth of their last six with a pair of wins on Sunday. The Retrievers won game one 19-7, before winning 14-1 in the nightcap.

The Retrievers improve to 7-11 on the year while Mount St. Mary's falls to 4-17.

Game One:

UMBC got things started early with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) led off with a single, and later scored on a Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

Mount St. Mary's would put up a pair of runs in the top of the second to take the lead. They would tack on two more runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead early.

The Retrievers would respond with a run of their own in the fourth, coming on a Raven Beeman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) RBI single that scored Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) that made it 4-2. After a three run home run, the Retrievers rattled off 17 unanswered runs, putting up five in the fifth, four in the sixth, three in the seventh and five in the ninth.

Collin Stack (Jamestwon, N.Y./Monroe CC) had eight RBI in the game, going 3-5 from the plate.His eight RBI are a UMBC DI program record. Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) and Torres each had two RBI as the Retrievers exploded for 19 hits.

Game Two:

UMBC continued where they left off in the first game, putting up five runs in the bottom of the second. Beeman singled home Torres, followed by a Casali single that scored Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./WT Woodson). Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) hit a sac fly that let Beeman cross the plate, before Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) had an RBI single and then scored on a fielding error.

The Mountaineers would answer with a run in the fourth, but the Retrievers would put up three runs in the fourth and six in the sixth to cruise to victory.

Carroll doubled home Casali, before Stewart blasted his first collegiate home run scoring Carroll in the fourth.

Stewart would hit yet another home run with a solo shot to lead off the sixth. Bright singled in Stack, while Nick Loiodice (Forest Hill, Md./Bel Air) hit a sac fly to right to score Torres. Bright would score pitched later on a wild pitch, before Carroll singled home Chris Convers (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) to cap the scoring.

Carroll and Stewart each had three RBI in the game, with Stewart collecting two hits, both home runs. 

Starter Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) picked up his first win of the year going five strong, giving up just one run with four strikeouts.

UMBC concludes their home stand on Wednesday, April 5 against Delaware. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
