UMBC Baseball Closes Home Stand Against George Mason on Wednesday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball concludes their five game home stand with a mid-week matchup with George Mason on Wednesday afternoon. The Retrievers took two of three with Albany this past weekend to open America East play.

Scouting the Retrievers (4-11):

-The Retrievers are coming off a series win against Albany to open America East play this past weekend. UMBC came from behind in game one to win 7-6 on a Jamie Switalski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) walk off single. Albany took game two before UMBC came back on Sunday for a 9-3 victory.

-Collin Stack leads the offense, hitting .310 with a team best 18 hits and seven RBI. Switalski and Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) lead the team with eight RBI apiece hitting .296 and .289 respectively.

-Joe Vanderplas (Fairfax, Va./Tennessee) leads the rotation with a 2-2 record with a 4.15 ERA and ten strikeouts. Jacob Christian leads the staff with 22.2 innings pitched and 26 strikeouts in four starts.

Scouting the Patriots (9-14):

-George Mason comes into the contest with UMBC at 9-14 and 2-1 in A-10 games. The Patriots have won six games at home, but are just 1-3 in road contests. Most recently, the Patriots took two of three from A-10 foe Fordham in Virginia. George Mason won the first two by scores of 2-0 and 8-4, before dropping the finale 6-5 on Sunday.

-Logan Driscoll leads the team with a .324 batting average, while also leading the team with 19 RBI. Tyler Nelin has provided the pop in the Patriot order with eight doubles and five home runs, both team bests.

-On the hill, Tyler Zombro leads the staff in three categories including ERA (2.48), innings pitched (36.1) and strikeouts (27). Brian Marconi has three wins to lead the roatation.

All-Time Series:

-George Mason and UMBC have met 58 times prior to Wednesday, with the Patriots holding a 43-15 advantage in the series.

-UMBC however has had the upper hand in recent years, winning the last two meetings. The Retrievers won 11-10 back in 2013 in Baltimore, before taking a 6-4 decision in 2015

On Deck:

-The Black and Gold will return to action on Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2 with a home-and-home series with Mount St. Mary's. The Mountaineers and Retrievers will play two in Emmitsburg on Saturday before playing a single game at Alumni Field on Sunday.
