UMBC Baseball Travels to Delaware, Hosts Towson in Mid-Week Action

Baltimore, Md.—The Retrievers will play a pair of mid-week games this week before heading to UNC Asheville this weekend. UMBC is coming off a big win against Gardner-Webb in the series finale on Sunday for their first win of the season.

Scouting the Retrievers (1-5):

-UMBC enters the mid-week matchups at 1-5, picking up their first win of the year in the series finale with Gardner-Webb on Sunday. Sophomore Jacob Christian (Nokesville, Va./Patriot) dazzled on the mound, throwing 7.2 innings of shutout ball, going perfect through the first 5.1 innings. He finished with a career best 12 strikeouts, giving up just two hits.

-Junior Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC) leads the offense hitting .304 through the first six games. He has a team best seven hits with one triple and three RBI. Senior Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and sophomore AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) have driven in four runs each to lead the Retrievers.

-UMBC will send out freshman Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James) and senior Kevin Little (Weldon, Calif./Taft CC) to the mound this week. Wilson has made one appearance, going 2.1 innings, while Little has thrown 1.1 innings of work this year. Junior Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) leads the rotation with a 4.15 ERA in two starts with ten strikeouts. Christian is 1-1 on the year with a 5.79 ERA and a team best 14 strikeouts.

Scouting the Blue Hens (3-6):

-The Blue Hens are coming off an 8-5 win against Rider on Monday morning, and will play Delaware State on Monday afternoon before taking on the Retrievers. Delaware is 3-6 on the year, in the midst of an eight game home stand.

-Offensively, Kevin Mohollen leads the offense with a .344 batting average entering Monday with a team best 11 hits. Doug Trimble is hitting .333 with 11 hits, five RBI and four stolen bases.

-On the mound, Kevin Miley leads the rotation with a 1.98 ERA in two starts. He has given up three earned runs with eight strikeouts. Brandon Walter leads the team with 14 strikeouts in 18 innings pitched this year.

Scouting the Tigers (6-1):

-Towson will have a Tuesday game at Delaware State before heading to Baltimore for the Wednesday tilt with the Retrievers. The Tigers sit at 6-1 on the young season, riding a five game win streak. Their lone loss came at Cal State Northridge in February. Most recently Towson swept Wagner at home this past weekend.

-The Tigers are led by Cuinn Mullins and Logan Burke who are both hitting over .300 for the year. Mullins is batting .348 with a team best eight hits going 2-3 on stolen base attempts. Burke has six hits in 19 at bats, having drawn five walks. Colin Dyer leads the team with six RBI in 2017.

-On the hill, Skyler Morris leads the staff with a 0.82 ERA in two starts, giving up just one earned run in 11 innings of work. Michael Adams is the team strikeout leader, fanning a team best ten batters.

All-Time Series:

-UMBC trails the all-time series with Delaware, 39-13, with Tuesday's meeting being the first since 2013. The Blue Hens have won the last five matchups, with the last Retriever win coming in 2008 in Newark.

-The Retrievers and Tigers have met 88 times prior to Wednesday, with the Tigers holding a slim 47-40-1 record in the series. UMBC has won the last five meetings dating back to 2014, and have won three of the last four at Alumni Field.

On Deck: 

-UMBC will head to UNC Asheville this weekend for a three game set with the Bulldogs. The Retrievers and Bulldogs will play Friday through Sunday with each game starting at 1 p.m.
