Harrisonburg, Va.—UMBC baseball found themselves in a battle on Saturday, but held on for a wild 13-11 extra inning win on Saturday. Senior Kevin Lachance (Clifton, Va./Centreville) went 4-4 with three RBI and three walks in the win, as UMBC snaps their eight game losing streak to move to 2-8 on the year.
UMBC got on the board early in the second inning. A.J. Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) reached on an error to lead things off, and would advance to third on a wild pitch after an Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) walk. Tim Kelly (Hampton, Va./York/Virginia Tech) reached on a fielder's choice to score Wright, followed by a Mitchell Carroll (Oakton, Va./Oakton) RBI ground out to make it 2-0 Retrievers. Senior Kevin Lachance kept the rally going, singling up the middle to score Kelly to make it 3-0.
The inning would continue, as Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) singled up the middle, moving Lachance and Nick Naumann (Essex, Md./John Carroll/Chestnut Hill) up, with Lachance scoring on an errant throw giving UMBC a 4-0 lead.
JMU would respond in their half of the second, getting a pair on three doubles in the inning. The Dukes would again cut the lead to one after scoring a run in the fourth to make it 4-3.
Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) would answer back, blasting a leadoff home run to left in the fifth, increasing the lead to 5-3.
The Dukes would once again answer with a run of their own in the fifth, and end up tying the game at 5-5 after an RBI ground out. The inning would not end there, as JMU put up five runs in the inning, aided by a Retriever error to give them an 8-5 lead after five.
Dolshun once again had the big play, this time reaching on a dropped fly ball that scored Lachance and Naumann to make it 8-7. But as is the story of the game, JMU answered with a run in the sixth to make it 9-7.
Late in the game with the game tied 10-10, Gatto drove in the go-ahead run, plating Lachance on a single up the middle. The Dukes would tie the game late at 11-11, forcing extra innings.
In the extra frame, UMBC got a pair of runs off a Casali double and Lachance single to lead 13-11. Denis Mikush (Burke, Va./Robinson) would come in to hold the lead, as the Retrievers won a wild 13-11 game on Saturday.
Lachance had a huge game at the plate, going 4-4 with five stolen bases and three RBI. Lachance also had three walks, as he reached base on every plate appearance. Naumann, Gatto and Dolshun all had multiple hit games. Jonny Dierks (Easton, Md./Independence/Fort Scott) earned the win, while Mikush picked up his first save of the year.
The series finale will be played tomorrow, Sunday, March 6 at 1 p.m.
