CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC freshman outfielder Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) has been named the America East Baseball Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Casali is the second Retriever rookie to earn the award this season after classmate Hunter Dolshun received the honor back on March 17.
In UMBC's four games last week, all wins, Casali hit .412 (7-for-17), while collecting at least one hit in each game to push his hit streak to 14 games. In addition, the rookie outfielder scored four runs and drove in three, and was not caught while successfully stealing three bases.
The Retrievers defeated Delaware State, 17-5, in mid-week action at Alumni Field as Casali went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Then in UMBC's weekend sweep of Albany in New York, the first in team history, the outfielder notched six more hits and scored three runs.
UMBC is set to host George Washington at Alumni Field on Tuesday evening before making the short drive to Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanover, Md. on Wednesday to face Coppin State. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
