Barnes Named America East Player of the Week

America East Release

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC junior outfielder Jake Barnes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) has been named the America East Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday morning.

Although UMBC (5-14) went winless last week, Barnes hit .500 (7-for-14) while connecting for two doubles and driving in three runs in the Retrievers' four games.  The junior went 2-for-4 at the plate against Navy in mid-week action, knocking in three runs for the Retrievers.  He followed it the next day by opening weekend play at East Carolina with a 2-for-3 effort at the dish, legging out a double in the game and also drawing a walk.  In the night cap of Friday's doubleheader, Barnes picked up another double in four at-bats, and then in Sunday's finale, he concluded the series with a 2-for-3 day.

For the season, Barnes is hitting .296 (21-for-71) and has driven in a team-best eight runs.  He has also drawn five free passes and is 2-for-4 in stealing bases.

Barnes' honor is the Retriever baseball program's second conference accolade of the season following Hunter Dolshun's Rookie of the Week award back on March 17.  Senior catcher Brandon Coluccio is the last Retriever to earn the Player of the Week citation when he was honored last season on March 18.

The UMBC baseball team starts the week with a road game at Delaware State on Tuesday afternoon before returning to Alumni Field to host UMES on Wednesday, April 2 at 6:00 p.m.  The Retrievers then return to the road to face America East rival Binghamton for a three-game weekend set, beginning on Saturday, April 5 in Vestal, N.Y.
