Our Mission: The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Sports Medicine Department seeks to provide comprehensive athletic training services for its student-athletes, including preventive services and education, first aid, treatment, and physical rehabilitation.
UMBC team’s physicians and surgeons are part of Medstar Union Memorial Sports Medicine. Union Memorial’s Sports Medicine team brings to UMBC a high level of experience and expertise in treating athletes. They offer some of region’s best sports medicine in doctors, services, and the latest in medical rehab and technology.
Medical care is provided out of two athletic training facilities for UMBC student-athletes. The main athletic training room is located in the Retriever Activities Center on the entry level and is home to the volleyball, basketball, and swimming and diving teams. This facility includes a physician’s office, conference room, and all the staff offices. The UMBC Sports Stadium Complex houses the second athlete training facility. Conveniently located between the men’s and women’s locker rooms, this facility is used by the soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball, cross country, and track and field teams.
UMBC is currently in the process of building a new arena facility which will house a new athletic training facility. This facility will become the main athletic training facility for all the athletes and will include two plunge pools as well as a treadmill therapy pool. It is slated to open in during the 2017-2018 academic year.
The Sports Medicine Department at UMBC provides athletic training services to approximately 360 student-athletes. A staff of six certified athletic trainers oversee the medical care for all student-athletes participating in UMBC’s 17 varsity sports. Services include education, injury prevention, treatment, evaluation, and rehabilitation of athletic related injuries. All staff members are certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Board of Certification and are licensed by the Maryland Board of Physicians.
