Kala Andrews was named Associate Athletics Director for Compliance in July of 2014.
The position reports directly to the Athletics Director and is responsible to uphold UMBC's dedication to excellence through monitoring, verifying and coordinating rules compliance with all NCAA, America East and university regulations and policies. At its core is the principle of university control and shared responsibility.
Andrews oversees the department’s scholarship budget and the Retriever women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming and diving and softball programs.
She serves on the university’s Title IX board and as a staff advisor for relationship violence and awareness prevention.
Andrews chairs the NCAA Initial Eligibility Waiver International subcommittee and has created and implemented multiple athletic department policies, including drug testing, exhausted aid, medical disqualification, athletic certification and a new athletic scholarship philosophy and process policy.
Since September of 2012, Andrews served as Associate Director of Compliance at the University of South Carolina. In that capacity, she was responsible for overseeing initial, transfer, and continuing eligibility for all 20 varsity sports. She also served as the athletics department liaison to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and University Housing, assisting with the admissions process for prospective student-athletes and all student-athlete housing assignments and issues.
Moreover, Andrews chaired the USC Admissions subcommittee and served on the university’s certification committee. She is also a member of the National Associate of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) and has served on their Legislation and Governance Committee since January 2014.
Prior to her stint in Columbia, Andrews held the position of Assistant Director of Compliance at Ohio State University from January 2010 through September 2012. She worked as the primary compliance contact for nine varsity sports, which included women’s basketball, women’s lacrosse, women’s volleyball, and men’s lacrosse.
Andrews also served as Ohio State's head administrator for the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, held in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Prior to joining the compliance staff full-time, the newest Retriever served as senior legal intern in the compliance office from 2008 to 2010 while finishing law school.
A native of Pickerington, Ohio, Andrews received her undergraduate degree in 2007 from Miami University (Ohio), where she earned a bachelor's degree in political science and history. She was nominated as one of Miami’s top alumni as part of their “18 of last 9” (top alumni of the last nine years).
Andrews later received her Juris Doctorate from Capital University Law School in 2010.
