Graduate student guard Jairus Lyles has been named Northwestern Mutual Athlete of the Week. Lyles averaged 29.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game in leading UMBC to home victories over Coppin State and Northern Kentucky. He was named America East Men's Basketball Player of the Week for games ending December 17.

Lyles leads America East in scoring (21.8 points per game) and steals (2.3 per game) and is ranked fourth in 3-pt. field goals made (2.8 per game), fifth in assists (4.0 per game) and 3-pt. field goal percentage (46.7), sixth in free throw percentage (81.7) and 12th in rebounding (5.4 per game).

A two-time America East Second Team honoree, Lyles became the tenth Retriever to reach the 1,300-point plateau (1,304 points), achieving the feat in just 63 games. He has scored 100 points in the last four games since returning from the concussion protocol and missing three contests. The 6-2 guard tied his season high with 31 points versus Northern Kentucky, a 2017 NCAA Tournament team, including UMBC’s final 11 points of the game in a 76-75 victory.

The 30-point effort was the sixth of Lyles’ career. He got to the free throw line 25 times in two games, knocking down 20 free throws.

The league honor was Lyles’ fourth during his UMBC tenure. He occupies the No. 3 position among active leaders in scoring in the conference.
