Andrew Smith, Men's Track & Field, Senior
Jan. 20-26, 2014
A week after missing out on the school record in the 1,000m run by .02, senior Andrew Smith achieved UMBC’s top time in the 800m run (1:51.30) on Friday at the NYU Team Challenge. The Chadds Ford, Pa. native won the event in New York and surpassed the former record of 1:51.78 set by Michael Christmas during the 2010-11 season, as well as his previous best (1:52.92), by over one second. Smith, who already qualified for the IC4A Championships to be held in Boston in March for the 1,000, also now has met the regional standard for the 800m, and ranks first in the event in the America East this season.
